Hanna Yokozawa Farquharson currently lives in Saltcoats, SK, having moved from Japan 2011. Hanna began making textile art blending imagery from rural Saskatchewan with Japanese aesthetic qualities of Wabi-Sabi. Her art is represented in the SK Arts Permanent Collection. 2021 nominated for Emerging Artists Award. Solo exhibition is on OSAC traveling tour. Hanna’s pieces have been juried nationally and internationally. Some of her pieces are included in private and corporate collections.

Gaia Symphony invites the viewer to listen to the symphony played by Gaia, our planet earth. Viewing this presentation of Gaia with our eyes, we are enabled to hear the music of Gaia with our ears and ultimately our inner being. This is related the Japanese word, 観 音（ Kan-Non ). Kannon means “See the sounds”. Kannon, a Bodhisattva who sees the sounds, listens to the voice of the universe, and conveys it to the ground. In Japan, where Hanna was born and raised, there is a culture of respecting nature and a deep awe of nature. The ancient religion of Shinto worships the eight million gods (spirits) within nature. We humans are a part of nature, and all living things have life. Beautiful mountains, rivers, flowers, trees, stones, clouds, and even the wind all have spirits. These living things may be singing and laughing with their own sounds at frequencies that we humans cannot ordinarily hear. Yokozawa Farquharson expresses these sounds in fabric using only traditional Japanese kimonos and kimono sashes or obis. She believes that this Gaia Symphony will give everyone who sees it a chance to feel connections.

Gaia Symphony is on exhibition at the Weyburn Art Gallery until the end of October.

Weyburn Art Gallery

The Weyburn Art Gallery is a public art gallery located within the Credit Union Spark Centre. The gallery focuses on visual art exhibitions. Working with the Credit Union Spark Centre, the Weyburn Art Gallery organizes and facilitates a variety of art and craft classes offered by the City of Weyburn. The Weyburn Art Gallery also works closely with the Weyburn Arts Council to create public art works in our city, as well as organizing a variety of art events held throughout Weyburn.
