À propos

MATSURI: Embrace with Joy is not merely an exhibition title; it is an immersive homage to timeless traditions that celebrate the seasons, the land, and the life it nurtures. In my native Japan, festivals have long been sacred community gatherings to express gratitude for nature's blessings, pray for the health of loved ones, and celebrate the passage of time, reflecting a deep spiritual connection to the natural world. This spirit of festivity transcends cultures, generations, and continents, serving as a vital means for people to come together in joy and appreciation. MATSURI carries this spirit forward as a contemporary art experience re-imagined on Canadian soil.

Having lived in Canada for 15 years, I have drawn profound inspiration from the animals and birds that inhabit this vast and generous land, translating their essence into vibrant forms and narratives within my artwork. This inspiration has culminated in an exhibition that expresses a vibrant world filled with color, storytelling, and playfulness. It is an immersive festival for both children and adults—a sensory celebration that invites not just observation, but feeling, touching, laughing, and marveling.

Within the gallery, vivid paper-mache clay sculptures of animals and birds, paintings, and quilts are meticulously handcrafted and adorned with radiant colors, enlivening the space and inviting visitors into the dynamic interplay between art and nature. The endangered Whooping Cranes, which are being carefully protected in Saskatchewan, are rendered life-sized; gently pulling a string brings these cranes to life, allowing them to soar. Quilts stitched with love and stories, evokes the warmth of a pure heart. A photo booth invites visitors to immerse themselves in the animal world, where colorful Canada Geese and porcupines dance across the walls, fostering a playful connection to the Canadian landscape and its vibrant wildlife.

I have immersed myself in art, selecting materials and techniques that felt most alive and necessary in each moment. Soon, I will mark my 10th year as an artist. Through this journey, I have come to understand that joy—shared joy—is not a luxury but a powerful act of healing, much like the communal spirit found in traditional Matsuri festivals.

MATSURI is a celebration of life, community, and the countless small wonders that make our world beautiful. It is a living experience, a space where joy wells up from deep within the heart. Learning from the wisdom of our ancestors, we come to understand that perhaps what we need most is not to become too serious, but to feel laughter, enjoyment, and joy-filled happiness—to celebrate the very joy of being alive. May this exhibition rekindle within each visitor a sense of wonder, connection, and the enduring joy of simply being alive.
