About

From Skin 2 Steel and Beyond - Hands on Workshop with Joy Lapps

Join us for an exciting hands on workshop From Skin 2 Steel and Beyond! Led by internationally acclaimed artist, composer, and educator Joy Lapps, this hands-on workshop offers participants the chance to explore the steelpan's history and sound.... From West African percussion, to tamboo bamboo, iron and steelpan... each participant will receive an instrument, introduced in chronological order, building a groove together as the session unfolds. Joy—an award-winning steelpan instrumentalist of Antiguan and Barbudan descent—grounds her music in community tradition while amplifying women’s contributions to the steelband movement. With six albums to her name, including Girl in the Yard (2022), she has performed at major festivals across North America and the Caribbean and designs inclusive steelpan programs for schools and communities. All are welcome! Space is limited, so please let us know if you register but can no longer attend.
