About
Come paint with Sue! Ladysmith artist Sue Williams will demo the art of silk painting using a blank silk scarf and French dyes.
The process to a finished piece starts with a well-planned drawing, which is transferred to the blank silk. The silk is stretched to a frame, and the resist is applied. The dried resist acts like a dam to contain the dyes. The dyes are painted by brush - much like the process with watercolor. Depending on complexity the piece can be painted in a day. After a 24-hour 'rest', the final process is to steam the silk for 2.5 hours, which sets the dye to the silk. After another period of rest, the silk is washed to remove the resist and the excess dye. The piece is ironed and ready to wear!
Due to the time required to do the drawing and the resist application, I will pre-prepare a scarf and apply the dye on-site. Those interested can paint sections with me! The final product will be steamed & washed days later, and a photo of the finished product will be on my Instagram @duckwilli and my website www.duckwillidesigns.com
