Exhibition: Jon Sasaki - We First Need a Boat for the Rising Tide to Lift Us

Waist deep in water and equipped with only rudimentary material and tools, artist Jon Sasaki attempts to build a functioning boat that would allow him to extricate himself and paddle to shore. As boat building in the water presents far more challenges than boat building on dry land, there is always a strong possibility the performance will end in failure.

Channeling an absurd romantic hero who finds himself nearly engulfed in nature, the artist relies on his ability to problem solve as complications arise and improvise solutions in the moment. Performed in Steveston, the home of his pre-internment Japanese-Canadian family, this new iteration of a past work takes on added dimensions. Documentation and ephemera of the performance will be included in the exhibition installation.

Richmond Art Gallery

The only public Gallery in Richmond, the Richmond Art Gallery (RAG) is a municipal Gallery supported by the non-profit Richmond Art Gallery Association (RAGA), a charitable organization. In operation since 1980, the Gallery presents curated exhibitions by British Columbia, national and international artists, maintains a permanent collection, and presents innovative and diverse programming for children, youth, and adults. Since 1992, the Gallery has been located in the Richmond Cultural Centre, and has evolved into a well-regarded professional contemporary art gallery that was awarded a Richmond Arts Award for leadership in 2010. RAGA supports the gallery through membership, fundraising, and advocacy.
