Please join a community workshop that wishes to center and uplift Indigenous youth who identify as Queer, Two-Spirit, Trans, Non-binary and/or other identities. This circle aims to be a safe space for gender non-conforming individuals to hand drum together and use their voice. Traditional Hand drumming has various teachings across Turtle Island and may vary nation to nation, we hope to honour and respect everyone's teachings and learn new teachings along the way. In this community space, all are welcome and all may wear attire that is appropriate/ or comfortable for them. This workshop is one that brings people together to learn a song, enjoy a meal, and to create an awesome Two-Spirit Anthem!

Summer Tyance - BC Culture Days Ambassador

Summer Tyance (she/they) is a Two-Spirit Anishinaabekwe, multidisciplinary artist from Kiashke Zaaging Anishinaabek located in Northwestern Ontario. She is a self-taught painter who has been painting with acrylic for over ten years, and more recently also does beadwork. Other arts they have been involved with are podcasting, improv, traditional hand drumming, singing, creative writing, film, and fancy shawl dancing. Summer utilizes art as a way to connect with their Anishinaabe culture, to heal, and to express spirit. She currently is based in Vancouver, BC or xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) territories.

Summer has been in a women's traditional hand drum group named Moonstone, for the last five years. It was with these matriarchs, community, and family where Summer learned how to use their voice. She knows the ongoing struggles of finding safe spaces for Q2S/Trans/Non-binary kin to drum, be who they are, and speak up. This workshop is an ode to the 2S ancestors and role models before us.
