This vibrant mural tells the story of Oakville’s Kerr Street neighbourhood — through the eyes and hands of youth and seniors who call it home. This mural project brought together 10 community members—youth aged 13 to 18 and seniors aged 50 and up to co-create a meaningful piece of public art that reflects the area’s history, diversity and evolving identity.

The mural weaves together the past and present, featuring elements such as the former Oakville Seniors Recreation Centre at 271 Kerr Street, views of Lake Ontario and the green spaces of Trafalgar Park. The final panel includes iconic architecture like the Oakville Arena’s historic wooden truss roof, the Tannery buildings and Turner Chapel, set alongside the modern-day Kerr Street corridor where long-standing businesses and new developments coexist.

Symbolism plays a strong role throughout the piece. The oak leaves and acorns represent strength and the deep roots of community connection, while dandelions and floating wishes symbolize hope and the resilience of immigrant communities who have helped shape the neighbourhood.

The Intergenerational Mural Project is part of Oakville’s ongoing commitment to public art, community storytelling and creating welcoming public spaces.
