À propos
In a tradition where the visual avoids the figurative, Islamic art has flourished with breathtaking abstraction, sacred geometry, and profound symbolism. “The Beauty of Iconoclastic Faith” invites you to explore the rich world of Islamic visual arts, where faith, form, and philosophy intertwine.
This immersive event unpacks the core elements of Islamic art — from the fluid lines of Arabic calligraphy and interlacing geometric patterns, to the rhythmic repetition of arabesques and the meticulous structure of tessellations. Rooted in a theology that eschews image-making, Islamic art offers a non-figurative yet deeply expressive visual language that reflects the divine.
Join us for:
-Hands-on Art Workshop
-Live Calligraphy Demonstration
-Talk on the Theological Foundations of Islamic aesthetics
-Interactive Exhibits of global Islamic art traditions
Whether you are an artist, educator, student, or curious visitor, this program opens a portal to understanding how Islamic visual culture expresses beauty without images, and how abstraction becomes a spiritual statement.
Celebrate the art of a faith that sees the infinite in the abstract — and the divine in every detail.
Organisateur
Bilal Shahid
Bilal Shahid is a dedicated student and practitioner of Arabic calligraphy with a background in both the artistic and academic dimensions of this traditional craft. He is currently studying classical Arabic scripts under the guidance of a master calligrapher through a nonprofit organization dedicated to celebrating, transmitting, and preserving the visual and aural Islamic Arts.
Bilal’s training includes hands-on learning at the Turkish Calligraphy Masterclass led by renowned calligrapher Ferhat Kurlu at MuslimFest 2024 in Mississauga, where he engaged with the traditional tools and techniques of Ottoman-style calligraphy. His learning journey is further supported by certificate programs such as Islamic Calligraphy: An Introduction to the Art of Handwriting by Universiti Malaya, and Learning Italic Calligraphy with Ina Saltz, giving him a strong foundation in a range of calligraphic styles and traditions.
A key influence in his understanding of Islamic art and cultural heritage has been Dr. Nadhra Shahbaz Khan, Associate Professor of Art and Architectural History at LUMS, Pakistan. Under her mentorship, Bilal explored the intricate relationships between Islamic arts, Mughal history, and architectural heritage, particularly that of Lahore — a fusion of influences that he now seeks to share with the Canadian public, particularly in the growing and diverse Brant region.
In addition to his artistic pursuits, Bilal is a renewable energy specialist and a licensed professional engineer, currently working full-time in the energy sector. He has also served as a part-time faculty member at Conestoga College, teaching in the School of Trades and Apprenticeship. This multidisciplinary background allows him to combine technical precision with artistic passion — bringing both structure and soul to his practice of Arabic calligraphy.
Through workshops, lectures, and community events, Bilal aims to promote the spiritual, cultural, and visual richness of Islamic arts, creating spaces for engagement, learning, and appreciation across communities. “The Beauty of Iconoclastic Faith” reflects this vision — a celebration of art that transcends the figurative, offering instead the infinite beauty of abstraction, geometry, and sacred design.
