À propos
This session will feature a live reading & production workshop of Rhymes with Vinegar - a new one-woman show by Katia Café-Fébrissy. Audience members will be invited to see first-hand what happens during rehearsals and production meetings! The workshop will be followed by an audience discussion about Black motherhood and navigating the school system.
Katia Café-Fébrissy is a bilingual multidisciplinary artist based in Toronto, a multi-award-winning director and screenwriter, and a playwright and stage director working in both French and English. She is a member of the Dramatists Guild of Canada, the Directors Guild of Canada, the Canadian Media Guild, and the Société des Auteurs de Radio, Télévision et Cinéma (SARTEC). She is an alumna of Women in the Director's Chair and Director's Lab North. Katia also teaches directing at Sheridan College in the Bachelor Film & TV program. She holds a Diplôme d'Études Supérieures in documentary filmmaking (Masters) from Ateliers Varan, France, and a Masters in Literature and Languages from Université Paris VIII, France.
This production is led by the directorial team at b current performing arts, including Executive Director Kira Allen along side Artistic Director and Brampton native, Marcel Stewart.
Marcel is a father, award-winning theatre maker, director, writer, educator, and arts administrator who serves as an Associate Artist for FOLDA (Festival of Live Digital Art). Marcel's curiosity about history and lineage - beyond the context of colonialism - is at the basis of his artistic practice. He holds a degree in Dramatic Arts from Brock University, was a member of the Soulpepper Academy, and completed the Theatre Enhancement Program (as a Directing Foreman) through Factory Theatre. Marcel often returns to the questions: Who am I? How am I? How did I get here? Who have I lost? What is my purpose?
Introduced to the magic of theatre and the arts at a young age, Kira is an arts manager drawn to storytelling in all its myriad forms. Kira has a long-time love of learning - when not working, you can often find her researching, reading, or taking a course to explore new things. She has a degree in Drama from the University of Toronto, a diploma from the Canadian College of Performing Arts, and a certification in Finance and Accounting from Toronto Metropolitan University. Kira specializes in systems and process improvement, is on the board of Mural Routes, and is a 2023-2024 DiverseCity Fellow.

b current Performing Arts
b current Performing Arts splashed onto the scene in 1991, when ahdri zhina mandiela founded the company in Toronto. Since inception, b current has developed scores of internationally celebrated artists and their works, with a focus always on engaging the community and creating space for diverse voices to be heard.
b current Performing Arts is a hotbed for culturally-rooted theatre development in Toronto. Originally founded as a place for Black artists to create, nurture, and present their new works, our company has grown to support artists from all diasporas. Over three decades, we have created space for intersectional voices to be heard, always with a focus on engaging the communities from which our stories emerge. As a result, these communities trust our company and respect the work that we do. Whether our audiences identify with our work through ethnic experience, social values, or political awareness, these groups are loyal to our programming because they recognize the high level of cultural authenticity and integrity we foster in our artists and their works.
We develop new and old works by intersectional artists with specific emphasis radical content and form.
We produce daring theatre creations and since inception we’ve mounted over a dozen main stage plays, and 100+ other public performances.
