About
Everyone is a composer! Whether you have a musical background or not, you are a composer. This interactive workshop led by BC Culture Days Ambassador, Harmeet Kaur Virdee, will use creative composition methods to show and inspire participants that they can compose music. There will be a table with arts supplies, and other materials for participants to create a visual composition/graphic score.
In the first half of this interactive workshop participants will create their musical compositions with guidance from the workshop facilitators. In the second half participants’ visual compositions will be performed and interpreted by PALS Quartet. Composers will be invited to give any directions to the quartet and join in the performance of their piece.
This event is open to all ages, and a background or experience with music is not required. Children 13 and under must be accompanied by a responsible adult.
Registration closes on October 4, 2024. Please register using the link below.

Organizer
Harmeet Kaur Virdee - BC Culture Days Ambassador
Harmeet Kaur Virdee (she/they) is a double bassist, composer, music educator, and arts administrator based in Surrey BC. As a musician and composer Harmeet gains inspiration from the sounds and behaviors of nature, as well as visual arts and human emotions. She strives for her music to connect to something bigger than herself, and for it to resonate and touch any listeners. Harmeet believes that music is a powerful form of expression and communication. Music has the ability to express thoughts, emotions, and feelings that words lack and can connect others on a deeper level.
In addition to performing Harmeet is the founder and organizer of Surrey Jazz Nights and a passionate teacher. She teaches a variety of ages at the VSO SoM and Queen’s Academy of the Arts. Harmeet enjoys working with students of all ages as they explore the wonders of music and hopes to inspire them to find their passion whether that is music or another medium.
