About
Métis artist Tracey-Mae Chambers is working to start conversations about decolonization using fibre site specific art installations across Canada.
#hopeandhealingcanada will be on view at the Historic Bovaird House during Culture Days, continuing to December 21, 2024.
Artist Statement:
Since July 2021, I have created over 150 installations at residential school historical sites, museums, art galleries and other public spaces. Many of these spaces serve to present a colonial viewpoint and primarily speak about the settlers who arrived and lived here, but not the Indigenous people that were displaced along the way. The installations are constructed with red wool, silk, cotton yarn that has been crocheted, knit or woven.
Red is the colour of blood. Red is the slur against Indigenous people. Red is the colour of passion and anger, danger, power, courage and love. I am hoping to bridge the gap between settlers and First Nations, Métis, and Inuit people by creating art that is approachable and non-confrontational and starting a conversation about decolonization and reconciliation.

Historic Bovaird House and Pendergast Log House
Over two hundred years the property surrounding Bovaird House has witnessed many changes from rural farmland to massive urban sprawl, Brampton has grown from a village to a thriving city.
In 1992 the ‘Friends of Historic Bovaird House’ volunteer group was formed. Starting with a completely empty farmhouse, the volunteers worked tirelessly raising funds to enable the loving restoration and furnishing of the house to the 1850 – 1900 time period. The museum was created by the volunteers with donated artifacts and period furnishings purchased with funds generated entirely by special events. Both Historic Bovaird House and the Pendergast Log House provide a glimpse into a bygone era.

Open Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday from 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm
*Last guided tour begins at 3:30 pm
