About
“stay | flame a postcard from my home” is a colour-shifting video of a spinning ceiling fan. Originally conceived during the COVID-19 lockdown, the fan, shot in my home, provided a way to suspend reality. It provided a way for me to transport out of present-day circumstances. The circular plane-shifting movement and transforming colours become a portal to somewhere beyond the confines of the room. I am intrigued by the fan’s capacity to generate air. The video of the fan will allow viewers to be mesmerized while viscerally responding to the plane-shifting aspect of the fan. The video is a single channel on loop. "Stay | flame" is a subtle spectacle representing the emergence from private to public emerging from the isolation of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Illuminate the Night presents Nicole Shimonek
My work is interdisciplinary investigating visual mediums of drawing, sculpture, and design with the theatrical discipline of performance, video, and installation.
I have an MFA from the Chelsea College of Art and Design (London, England) and a BFA Honors from the University of Manitoba. Selected exhibitions include Live in the Centre: An Incomplete and Anecdotal History of Performance Art at the Winnipeg Art Gallery, Unafraid at Plug In ICA, Art Building Community at Gallery 1C03, and Walking and Being at the Everson Museum of Art (Syracuse, NY). I have been awarded public art commissions through Urban Idea’s Creative Placemaking Challenge as well as the Social Innovation Challenge. My videos have screened at the Detroit Museum of New Art (USA), on BBC’s big screen events, Camden Roundhouse (London, UK), at Prairie Scene (Ottawa), Images Festival (Toronto), Supermarket Art Fair (Stockholm, Sweden) and with Studio 303 at the MAI (Montreal).
Artist in Residences includes the Banff Centre for the Arts (Canada), Brompton Design District, and SE1 Studios with Bow Arts Trust (London, England). Upcoming is the Drawing Research Residency at L’AiR Arts in Paris, France (October 2021). Other residencies include Plug In ICA’s Summer Institutes with Post Commodity; Assume Astro Vivid Focus and Trackings & Trappings. My practice investigates survival experiences through materials - drawing, sculpture, performance, media, and design.
-- Each year, the "Illuminate the Night" open call is held for artists to propose pieces that will enthrall, excite and possibly introduce Winnipeggers to something they have never seen or experienced before at Nuit Blanche. Projects are selected by a jury of artists and art professionals and are featured in Winnipeg’s downtown core. --
