About

Come paint and connect with folks in the community by taking part in a collaborative mural on canvas! Local visual artist, and one of this year’s BC Culture Days Ambassadors, Annabelle Bail will host this communal event at the beautiful Nanaimo Art Gallery in downtown Nanaimo.

First, we welcome you to sit and mingle at our creative stations located in the gallery’s Art Lab where you’ll have the space you need to embrace your inner artist!

Starting with some time to sketch and experiment with acrylic painting as well as collaging with elements from old magazines, you’ll get to share thoughts and ideas with others around the table! Once you’re ready and have a spot secured (time slots will be determined upon arrivals on the day of the event) a 20 minute period will be allocated for you to work your magic with a curated palette of colours on one of the two large scale canvases provided and leave your personal mark.

Lean into whatever artistic style feels best for you, from abstract to expressionism (creating from emotions), line work to painting with realistic components. Annabelle invites you to express yourself completely authentically!

This project will provide an opportunity along with a space for all to embrace the uniqueness of our different perspectives by collaborating on an art piece together, exploring the themes of what joy, happiness, and safety looks and feels like to each of us in forms of symbols, patterns, and colours.

After the mural’s completion, the two canvases will be displayed in a public space here in Nanaimo (to be determined) where everyone will be invited to visit and experience them with pride, knowing it’ll become a small slice of our community’s history—one cohesive artwork from the hands of many people with a story to tell.

This community event is FREE and for folks of all ages from Nanaimo (Snuneymuxw) and surrounding areas to come together and collaborate artistically! Enjoy also some locally sourced snacks, coffee, and tea during the event!

Special thanks to our community partners at Nanaimo Art Gallery, Big Brother Big Sisters, and Iron Oxide Art Supplies.

To get an idea of how many people will come and paint with us we suggest that you register in advance, though it is a drop in event! Come with your friends and family!
