À propos

Look Up, Look Down will be a series of image stills and video clips played simultaneously using multiple screens. The goal is to create a shifting performance of light and colour, showcasing the various landscapes that make up Manitoba.

I will be utilizing multiple screens to project unique elements of the province in a public space. In Manitoba we have such a vast variety of languages present in our landscapes, and I want to create a dialogue. I want to merge my lived experience traveling between rural and urban communities. Exploring ditches and culverts was something I loved dearly, and I think that the experience of catching frogs in the springtime triggers a nostalgia for some Winnipeggers that I want to tap in to.

This past year I’ve been joyfully falling back in love with Manitoba’s streams and rivers, finding little treasures on my lockdown adventures. I want to celebrate our shared environment by bringing it into an urbanized environment. Look Up, Look Down is born of familiarity. I want to show people a view of Manitoba up close and personal, celebrating our rolling deserts and deep woods in a way that is fun, exciting, and accessible.

Illuminate the Night presents Leandra Brandson & Kara Tinkler

Leandra Brandson is a queer interdisciplinary artist currently living and working in Treaty 1 Territory, Winnipeg, Manitoba. She is a recent graduate at the University of Manitoba’s School of Art, receiving her BFA with Honours in the spring of 2021. Her works primarily focus on the figure rendered with clay at an exaggerated scale. Using vibrant colours and textures build upon initial forms, Brandson articulates the inherent intersectionality of collective queer experience.

-- Each year, the "Illuminate the Night" open call is held for artists to propose pieces that will enthrall, excite and possibly introduce Winnipeggers to something they have never seen or experienced before at Nuit Blanche. Projects are selected by a jury of artists and art professionals and are featured in Winnipeg’s downtown core. --
