Program Description:

Nishin Niizh, serves to support Indigenous, and other criminalized artists, in a healthy, Wholistic and unapologetically decolonial process of art creation. Oshkaabewisag Adam Francis Proulx and Sarah Gartshore were honoured to work together in building an online space where Indigenous artists felt well held enough, in the midst of a global health pandemic, to begin to create again. That space is called Project Nishin. Nishin Niizh artists offered one another community and safe space as they marked an extraordinary time in their lives and shared in one another's artistic journey's. For their Ontario Culture Days residency, Gartshore and Proulx led a new edition of Project Nishin, featuring a new roster of makers and focusing on mentorship and creative processes. The final project will include a series of programs premiering at the 2022 Fringe North Festival, developed together with their Project Nishin artists. Their work will screen for the duration of the Ontario Culture Days Festival at the Sault Ste. Marie Museum.

Fringe North strives to connect artists with audiences, youth with mentors, creatives with community, and to increase access to the arts for all. Fringe North offers an annual festival that runs each August. Although our primary focus is theatre, the festival has expanded to include a multi-arts experience offering something for everyone. Fringe North is located in Bawaating, the area known as Sault Ste. Marie, and the traditional lands of the Anishinabewaki ᐊᓂᔑᓈᐯᐗᑭ and Michif Piyii, territory covered by the 1850 Robinson-Huron Treaty as part of the Upper Canada Treaties.

The Sault Ste. Marie Museum is a non-profit, charitable organization facilitated by the Sault Ste. Marie & 49th Field Regiment R.C.A. Historical Society for the citizens of Sault Ste. Marie and the District of Algoma, as well as visitors to the community. A management Board of Directors oversees the operation of the Museum. The museum was opened in 1983 by the Society under an agreement with the City of Sault Ste. Marie for the use of the “Old Post Office” building.
