Museum's Mission:
The Stratford Perth Museum Association is a not-for-profit corporation dedicated to the preservation and celebration of the rich material and cultural heritage of the County of Perth and the City of Stratford. To this end, the Association operates the Stratford Perth Museum to provide curatorial services for the artifacts and collections placed in its care, and to present public educational exhibits, programs and information which bring to life the history of the region for its citizens and visitors, in accordance with the Museum’s agreement with the City and County.
Description:
Although the Stratford Perth Museum was incorporated as a not-for-profit in 1997, the museum’s collection dates back to the beginning of the 20th century when the Library Act of 1902 permitted local libraries to collect and display museum collections. The collection has continued to grow over the years and has been housed and exhibited in a number of homes which include Fryfogel Tavern, a factory on King Street in Stratford and the Stratford Normal School, adjacent to the Festival Theatre. In 2008, having outgrown the Stratford Normal School, the Stratford Perth Museum Association purchased its present 7 acres on the old Huron Road. The site is complemented by an 1870 Victorian buff brick home, woodlots and trails – a home with room to grow and endless potential to interpret our rich cultural heritage and to deliver indoor and outdoor programming.
Activity:
Although this is the first time the museum will be organizing an Indigenous Art & Craft Market, we have hosted related programs for local artists in numerous year-round events and comprehensive tours including: the Lost Arts Salon, Printmaking School Tours, and Lenscape Photography Workshops. In relationship to reconciliation projects, our Heritage Trails and Tours provide an overview of Indigenous Nations with a focus on the Six Nations Confederacy. Along with our Together on this Land immersive recurring event that explores Haudenosaunee culture via a faceless doll craft and Sky Woman storytelling activity. These programs are tailored to our local audiences and tourists who are discovering more about their own identity as it relates to arts, culture, and local heritage.
