À propos
To celebrate the 150th anniversary of the birth of Lucy Maud Montgomery, The Book Drunkard Festival is hosting a fun-filled celebration with lots to see and do. We will be joined at Blue Heron Books by two picture book author/illustrators and their new books about Anne & Maud.
The Book Drunkard Festival borrows its name from one of Maud's famed quotes, "I am simply a book drunkard"
This free, family-friendly event features storytime, crafts and refreshments - all to honour our national, and, local treasure; Maud penned 11 of her 22 novels in nearby Leaskdale. Learn how to braid, make a unique bookmark, practice your cursive writing (on a slate, if you like!) or create a unique raspberry herbal tea to take home and drink with your kindred spirit. All tea activities are in conjunction with our neighbouring tea shop, The Bridge Social.
Our guest author/illustrators are Catherine Little and Janet Reid-Wilson.
Anne of the Library-on-the-Hill, honours LMM and is a tribute to librarians. Author Catherine Little will be on hand to read the book and create bookmarks with the children.
Maud of Green Gables explores the intertwined legacies of Anne Shirley's world and LM Montgomery's life. Janet Reid-Wilson's extraordinary new illustrations depict a more realistic Anne, true to Montgomery's sparkly heroine.

Blue Heron Books/Book Drunkard Festival
The unpretentious atmosphere of Blue Heron Books with its comfy chairs, wood shelving, and creaky floors lends itself to a long, slow, browsing session. However, under that sleepy atmosphere vibrates a strong pulse. The store has a quaint, old-fashioned look with an up-tempo vibe because there is always something happening! In its storied, thirty-five-year history, Blue Heron Books has played host to and continues to showcase a veritable who’s who of the world’s literary community. From impromptu store visits by Timothy Findley to legendary events with such literary superstars as John Irving, Michael Ondaatje, Louise Penny, Fredrik Backman, Yann Martel, Douglas Coupland, and Dav Pilkey, to name a few, our customers are able to rub shoulders and gain insight from a star-studded cast.
In 2019, Blue Heron Books inaugurated The Book Drunkard Literary Festival, setting the stage for another interesting chapter in Blue Heron Books’ history. After 35 years, putting Uxbridge on the literary map in Canada is not a stretch for Blue Heron Books.
Former Durham resident, Lucy Maud Montgomery once quipped, “I am simply a book drunkard” — relatable words for readers and writers. The Book Drunkard Festival captures the wonderment of the written word and its ability to intoxicate, transport, and transform; it is meant for all ages and myriad tastes.
Two-time winner of The Libris Award (Best Bookstore in Canada) and named as a favourite by the legendary Stuart McLean, Blue Heron Books values its location in a 200-year-old building located in the busy and popular shopping area once frequented by former resident Lucy Maud Montgomery. The store is a hub for the community and a bastion of friendly chaos where everyone is welcome.
A special guest announcement is in the works!
