As a departure from conventional plastic headphone remote listening and traditional musical performance, Tuning In Tuning Out for Listening Ensemble creates a local display of deep listening through a collaborative sound walk. Participants will be invited to become performers wearing the environmental listening headsets (wood, glue, orange oil, leather) created by musician/artist Daniela O’Fee, and instructed to move through a space together interacting with surrounding sounds in an ecological context. The headsets act as sculptural instruments that capture ambient sounds and relate to how binoculars are used on a hike. The minimal performance guidelines allow for a chance outcome depending on the collaborative interpretation of the ensemble. The soundwalk hopes to promote listening as a path to social wellness, a way of connecting with the environment, and toward hearing the diverse voices of others.
Children under the age of 12 are to be accompanied by an adult. This event is dependent on dry weather.

Daniela O'Fee
Traversing the multi-sensory landscape, Daniela O’Fee creates performative, immersive experiences to investigate the flux between acoustic and visual realms. With a Bachelor of Music degree from University of Victoria, Daniela has worked as a pianist, director, composer and educator in British Columbia for over thirty years. Informed by her long career as a musician, her newly emerging practice extends the act of listening beyond traditional music making toward experimental intermedia which she explores as a mid-life student of the Visual Arts Department at Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops. Intersecting her diverse creative disciplines, Daniela uses innovative practices in wood lamination along with found music objects and obsolete audio machines to research sculptural aspects of sound. Her series of bent wood Environmental Listening Headsets have been sighted in multiple BC locations as part of her performative sound walks, Tuning in tuning out for solo listener or listening ensemble.
