À propos

Curated by Kimberly Philips

“Deanna Bowen’s artistic practice concerns itself with histories of Black experience in Canada and the US. Her focus is the 'dark matter' in our midst: figures and events that have remained below the threshold of visibility not because they are impossible to find, but because their existence reveals systematized racism difficult for the majority culture to acknowledge." - Kimberly Philips

With the recent rise of social justice issues into popular consciousness, Bowen’s project is particularly valuable for those wishing to see the Black experience reflected and as a means of gaining insight into some of our society’s lingering shortcomings. Deanna Bowen is the 2020 Governor Generals Award winner; she is an established presence in the Canadian art scene and a friend of the Thames Art Gallery, having shown in the Chatham area on several occasions. Widely celebrated for her ability to weave family history and cultural documents into personal, emotive and truthful stories, Bowen creates an archive rich with fact and poetry.

This exhibition is circulated by The Contemporary Art Gallery.
