À propos

At this unique and thought-provoking exhibition, Graff Not Art, the public can expect a dynamic fusion of contemporary ceramics, painting, and cultural commentary. Artists Denny Provost and Joe Lyons bring their personal histories and creative practices together in a show that explores the blurred lines between graffiti, fine art, and traditional craft.

Visitors will experience the vivid realism and hidden imagery in Denny Provost’s layered paintings, where abstraction and storytelling intertwine. Born in Ontario and now based in Nanaimo, Denny’s art reflects a rich ancestral history that includes the first recorded Indigenous-settler marriage in Canada—stories that echo through his masked, symbolic works.

Ceramic artist Joe Lyons, also of Nanaimo, presents pottery influenced by both historical ceramic traditions and the rebellious, expressive energy of hip-hop and graffiti. Expect hand-crafted pots finished using spray paint, stencils, and pens—techniques rooted in his teenage experiences and lifelong creative evolution. Joe's work is deeply community-oriented, bridging function, culture, and social engagement.

Together, their exhibition asks: What defines graffiti? Is it about the tools, the intention, or the context?

Attendees can look forward to bold visual statements, conversations around art and identity, and a fresh take on what it means to create outside the lines. Artists will be onsite during the show.

Arts Council of Ladysmith & District/Ladysmith Gallery

The Arts Council of Ladysmith and District (ACLD) is the central hub for visual arts in Ladysmith and surrounding areas. Our mission is to enhance the vitality of the artistic community through education, exhibition, and engagement. With the vision that Art is Here!, we aim to create inclusive, accessible, and inspiring artistic experiences for all.

Year-round, we offer monthly exhibitions at the Ladysmith Gallery—open to member artists from across Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands—as well as feature shows, a boutique of locally made art, and guest artist displays. Our thriving arts education program offers workshops and classes for all ages and skill levels, led by professional artists.

In addition to exhibitions and education, we host major community events like our juried Arts on the Avenue festival and continually work to support, connect, and celebrate local artists. We are proud to operate on the traditional territory of the Stz'uminus First Nation and are committed to sharing and honouring the diverse cultures of our region.
