À propos

Kim Macedo will be teaching a simple percussive and catchy easy to learn, dance workshop. Suitable for young to mature adults.

In this class, Kim will briefly explain the history of Flamenco and introduce the class to the concept of movement: feet and arm coordination and transmitting the emotion of the dance. Dancers will learn body awareness and posture. The will learn to listen to the music and follow the clues of breaks and starting over with the next verse of the song.

Participants should arrive early. Bring hydration. Wear shoes with small heels and preferably with strap or tie up. No runners. Comfortable dance clothes are sportswear, skirts are also encouraged and will be used as a prop.

Kim Macedo is a Flamenco Dancer, Choreographer and Musician based between Oakville (Canada) and Jerez (Spain). Committed to a lifestyle that encompasses a study of improvisation and musicality in flamenco, Macedo’s experience is vast, spanning 20 years of complete immersion in the underground juergas, private fiestas and ferias of Jerez, Moron, Granada and more recently, the Toronto juerga community. Her ongoing studies with various professionals in Jerez and foundational, respected flamenco pioneers Ana Maria López (Jerez) and Pepe Torres (Moron ) have shaped her expertise in the Triana and Jerez styles of gitano flamenco. Most recently, she was a featured (and the first Canadian) Flamenco dancer in Guarida del Angel's curated line up in the Festival Jerez of 2020. In 2022 post pandemic Macedo continued her artistic learning and experience performing locally in Jerez. Her last performance in Peña La Züa in June 2023 in Jerez got her a standing ovation. Macedo’s methodology is rooted in curiosity mixed with elements of her lived experiences, having grown up in a large, social family of musicians in South India. She values the legacy of the flamenco lifestyle and what the social aspect means to the art form; "I wanted to know where flamenco went after the big theatre shows? Who did they go home to? Who nourished their expression and passion? Who was their family ? What, how and where did vivencia come from? How does the connection to the people around them play out in the art? That’s what I try to unpack in my work."
