À propos

A gathering of flamingos is called a “flamboyance,” which is the same type of energy I wanted to capture in this exhibit. In the 1980s, plastic flamingo lawn ornaments experienced a huge surge in popularity that lasted for over a decade. In the Winnipeg neighborhood of Transcona, the prevalence of these pink yard accoutrements has persisted. Growing up in the 1990s I would occasionally hear about this trend, usually spoken about derisively, and wondered why they weren’t as popular in other parts of the city.

Flamingos are bright and colorful. If I ever have the privilege of owning my own home, I will definitely add some flamingo flavor to my yard. For now, however, the best I can do is share "A Flamboyance of Flamingos" with you on Nuit Blanche. Together we can imagine that we’re back in the 80s: a decade of great music, crazy hair, and a potent enthusiasm for neon colors.

Illuminate the Night presents Nicholas Danzinger

Nick Danzinger is a data analyst by day and a maker by night. Previously, his primary creative outlet was woodworking. He has completed numerous projects including tables, skateboards, board games and more. Recently, however, his main interest has been in creating luminescent artwork and sculptures.

Nick's closest connection to the arts is through his involvement with North Forge, a local makerspace in the Exchange District. He volunteered there as the Green Team Lead for over 5 years and helped ensure sustainable practices were in place. While at North Forge he became friends with several artists who were using the resources there to create amazing art installations and interactive exhibits.

After having his eyes opened to the creative potential of modern manufacturing tools and different light sources, Nick decided he wanted to pursue his own exhibit at Nuit Blanche as it is one of his favorite events each year.

--- Each year, the "Illuminate the Night" open call is held for artists to propose pieces that will enthrall, excite and possibly introduce Winnipeggers to something they have never seen or experienced before at Nuit Blanche. Projects are selected by a jury of artists and art professionals and are featured in Winnipeg’s downtown core. ---
