À propos

Ukrainian Museum of Canada, Ontario Branch is offering pay-what-you-can admission to our current exhibit "The Spirit of Beads: Sharing our Stories", presented in partnership with the Native Canadian Centre of Toronto.

The exhibit focuses on beadwork and its significance, examining the similarities and differences in techniques, motifs, and symbolism among the many types of traditional Indigenous and Ukrainian beadwork. It addresses the history of the bead trade in North America and Ukraine, tracing the origin of beads from natural materials such as stones, shells, and bones, to commercially-manufactured beads. Displays feature modern pieces of beadwork from contemporary artists alongside historical objects from Ukrainian Museum of Canada, Ontario Branch and the Native Canadian Centre of Toronto, demonstrating how modern beadwork re-invents and expresses past and present understandings of cultural identity.

To comply with provincial and municipal government COVID-19 restrictions only FOUR people at a time may be admitted into the museum to view our exhibition. Appointments MUST be booked in advance via Eventbrite. Between each time slot, the Museum will be sanitized.

Health and safety is our main priority. To keep you and our employees safe, visitors to the Museum must wear masks at all times and maintain social distancing.

Organisateur

Ukrainian Museum of Canada, Ontario Branch

The Ontario Branch of the Ukrainian Museum of Canada was established in 1944 at the Kn. Olha Branch of the Ukrainian Women’s Association of Canada, based at St. Volodymyr Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral in Toronto. After 35 years at that location, the Museum moved to larger facilities within St. Vladimir Institute, where it is located today.

The modest collection of significant artifacts amassed by Ontario Branch founders Jean Wachna, Dorothy Hutsulak-Mandziuk and Kalyna Sakaliuk has grown over the decades. Today, the Museum houses more than 5,000 artifacts, predominantly textiles, that have been collected, researched, documented, photographed and preserved to professional museum standards by a cast of dedicated volunteers.

Since 1980, Museum volunteers have produced at least one major thematic exhibit annually, many complemented by special programming for school groups and others. We draw on our own collections, as well as artefacts from community members and other institutions. Some of our exhibits travel to community festivals, conferences and symposia. Our Museum attracts visitors of diverse heritage from across North America, Ukraine and beyond.
