À propos

Since June 2018, people have been gathering for a sound meditation every equinox and solstice in the Pool of the Black Star at the Manitoba Legislative Building. The last one was held on the Winter Solstice of 2019 and it had gotten so popular that it far exceeded the capacity of the space, necessitating a new approach that would allow for greater accessibility. That new approach is Sound Odyssey, but the Covid pause has delayed its launch, so for the time being it is being launched virtually as part of Culture Days.

Sound Odyssey combines pre-recorded soundscapes with live instruments, allowing for much greater flexibility and an expanded sonic palette. As a result, there are not one but four different Sound Odysseys, each with a different focus:

Restoration: a focus on extended tones, including crystal bowls, singing bowls and gongs, plus tanpura, didgeridoo and more.

Strength: a meditation on the sound of the drum, including frame drum, kendang, tabla, African drums, Middle Eastern rhythms, Irish jig, udu and berimbau, along with flute, fiddle and other instruments.

Insight: a different perspective brought about by unusual instruments like the waterphone and exploring the sounds of common objects. Playing with time unlocks hidden sonic possibilities.

Wisdom: augmented field recordings from around the world.

Each of these is augmented with live handpan, which injects the presentation with its unique energy and presence. This Sound Odyssey Sampler offers a taste of each one, accompanied by engaging video and imagery. Good speakers are recommended in order to enjoy the physical benefits of the experience.
