This Mexican folk art has been used since the 19th Century. The tradition originates from the practice of making Amatl (Kind of tree bark textile) by the Aztecs. The designs are commonly cut from colored tissue paper using a guide or template, a small mallet, and chisels, creating as many as fifty banners at a time. Papel picado (meaning punched paper) can also be made by folding tissue paper and using small, sharp scissors. Papel Picado, also known as banderitas, are popular at parties and family gatherings as decorations, Easter and offerings for the Day of the Dead.

Age – 5 years and older Parent supervision is needed for this workshop since participant will be using scissors or a cutter. Parents are encouraged to help their children with cutting.
