À propos

Wheat Weaving

Because of Covid, we ask that all participants use hand sanitizer before and after handling any objects at the table. We also ask that masks are worn and guests maintain a safe and respectful distance from those not in their immediate group. Thank you!

Wheat weaving is as old as growing wheat, or growing other grains, for that matter. Field workers would take grain from a productive section of the field and weave it into a design. The shape housed the spirit of the crop until it was planted during the next seeding season. Different villages developed their own symbols which were incorporated into "love knots", worn by maidens to proclaim their availability for courtship. "Corn dollies" (Europeans referred to all grains as "corn") were fashioned to represent the gods of harvest.

With this activity, you’ll get a chance to create your own woven wheat design led by Janice Pilipow, one of the mill’s friendliest volunteers!

Organisateur

Yorkton Heritage Brick Flour Mill Society

The Yorkton Brick Mill Heritage Society Inc. was formed in early 2012 by individuals interested in encouraging the preservation of the oldest surviving brick flour mill in Saskatchewan.
