History🍓
Did you know that Mission, BC was once home to many strawberry farms? Strawberries grow wild, but many farmers also cultivated the much loved berries. Thanks to early Japanese settlers, the soil was worked and conditioned to make it more fertile, sometimes using silt from the Fraser River. Berries and jam making were a major industry in the Fraser Valley. Residents celebrated every Summer with a strawberry festival led by a crowned Strawberry King and Queen.
Much loved by many, strawberries hold deep meanings in many different cultures. Mission is home to many diverse cultures, but what connects us all is the land and the ways that we love and care for it.
🍓Connection and Reconciliation
The strawberry is a reminder of the importance of heartfelt relationships and reconciliation, both within families and communities. It's shape and colour is reminiscent of a heart symbol.
🍓Love and Care
It is also associated with the teachings of love, care, and peace, emphasizing the need to nurture both ourselves and others. In Indigenous and Métis cultures, the strawberry also represents the heart.
🍓Health and Wellbeing
The strawberry plant was traditionally used for its medicinal properties.
🍓Life and Health
The strawberry is the first fruit of the summer, symbolizing new life and health.
