In Canada going back to the 1700s, when fur traders from France and Scotland married Aboriginal women, their descendants formed a rich and distinctive culture. The Métis are a proud people whose hunting skills were of great benefit to the fur traders. Because of their mixed heritage, they were raised to appreciate both Aboriginal and European traditions.
In 2016, in Canada, there were approximately 600,000 Métis. The long, rich Métis culture includes many arts, including the tradition of fingerweaving to create beautiful sashes. The decorative sash, worn as a belt had other uses as a rope or fastening line.
Participants will create a small woven bracelet or bookmark. They can join and leave at any time. Materials will be provided.

Deep Cove Heritage Society
Deep Cove Heritage Society (DCHS) educates our community through a variety of outreach programs including presentations to seniors, elementary school students and community groups and visual displays at a variety of accessible public locales - Schools, festivals, community days restaurants, galleries, community centres and other museums.
We provide local walking tour pamphlets and guided walking, bus and boat tours as well as tourist information. Deep Cove Heritage Society (DCHS) is a group of dedicated members whose mandate is to develop an understanding, preservation and appreciation of our local history.
Our organization acquires, preserves and displays the collective memories of our community's history - photographs, documents and transcripts, tapes and videos of interviews with local pioneers.
