The Steampunk Miniature Metal Sculpture Project is a recycling focused event that is comprised of a Scavenger Hunt to gather metal scrap, a hands-on Workshop to learn how to create metal sculpture, and a 1 week home based effort to use what you have learned to create your final piece. All final sculptures will be returned to the McMillan Arts Centre where they will be juried and the winner will be announced. The Sculptures will then be displayed in the Atrium at City Hall until BC Culture Days ends on Sunday, October 15th. This is a family focused event where members of a family are encouraged to participate as a pair or a team. It is a great opportunity to introduce the benefits of recycling to participants and give them the full value experience of locating and transforming “junk” into art treasures.

The Workshop will be lead, via video, by one of the world’s leading Artists in the rapidly growing art form of Scrap Metal Sculpture, Mr. Dotun Popoola of Nigeria. Dotun will also be judging the competition and one of the prizes for the awarded sculpture is a copy of his renowned book, “Metal & Metaphor”. The book is a work of art unto itself.

This is a wonderful opportunity to learn an art form that requires almost zero dollars to immerse yourself in. Metal Scrap is abundant and can easily be transformed into uniquely creative artworks.

*This is an outdoor venue located at the end of Memorial Avenue where it intersects with the Alberni Highway.*

There are 3 Galleries located inside the M.A.C. along with a Digital Gallery and a fabulous Gift Shop that is filled with unique works by local Artists & Artisans. There are Exhibitions in the Galleries throughout the year, an ongoing series of Arts & Craft Classes, Poetry Readings, Music Classes, Dance Groups, Chorale Groups, and more. It’s all happening at the M.A.C. Activities for everyone from children to our seniors are plentiful and diverse.
