Don Kwan will launch a new community event in his adopted hometown of Westmeath in Whitewater Region. The event will celebrate diversity and spotlight the visual and performative power of the arts within rural communities. Featured talent includes: Success Dragon Lion Dance Troupe, China Doll, Zaneta Pernicova, Soul Meadows and Catherine Timm.

Don Kwan (he/him) is a queer third-generation Chinese-Canadian multidisciplinary artist, whose work explores place, identity, representation and intergenerational memory-making across time. Reflecting upon modernist depictions of landscape in Canada, Kwan explores legacies of inclusion and exclusion, rooted in land-based settler colonialism. Whether landscape, abstraction, or portraiture, 20th-century Canadian modernism was founded at a time when discriminatory policies such as the Chinese Immigration Act and the Chinese Exclusion Act were in place. Through community outreach, project initiatives, festivals, workshops and his own family’s history of more than a century in Canada, Kwan considers the question: What does it look like to belong in the Canadian landscape?

Ontario Culture Days

The Ontario Culture Days Festival is an annual celebration of arts, culture and heritage taking place each fall across the province. Each year, we work with organizers of all disciplines to produce this province-wide festival. Organizers host programs throughout Ontario and invite the public to participate for free.

Ontario Culture Days lives at the local level. We support organizers from the smallest hamlets to the largest cities, while coordinating with other national and provincial Culture Days partners. We support the success of our sector colleagues through resources and network development, while highlighting the breadth and heterogeneity of Ontario’s arts and culture to the wider public.
