Edson's Red Brick School Cornerstone was laid on a rainy afternoon on September 17, 1913. The School was completed later that year - Only two years after Edson's incorporation as a Town in 1911. It was Edson's only school for Grade 1-12 until the Central School was completed in 1951, and remained an elementary school until 1967.
From 1967 to 1984 the Yellowhead School Division used the Red Brick as a Maintenance Shed and Bus Barn.
In 1984 the Red Brick was facing demolition a group call the 'Red Brick Aid Committee' was formed. The group was intent on preserving this community Heirloom. In July 1984, the Yellowhead School Division turned over ownership of the building and grounds for $1.00.
In 2009 the Red Brick Art Centre & Museum received declaration as a Municipal Historic Resource through the Town of Edson.
Today ECHO - Edson Cultural Heritage Organization owns and operates the Red Brick Art Centre and Museum. ECHO is a nonprofit organization that relies on fundraising, grants and donations to keep this beautiful building up and running.
Our three main fundraisers are the Strawberry Tea and Garage Sale held every June, the Harvest Bazaar and Tea held in October, and the Festival of Trees held in November. We also run the Blast from the Past Summer Program for 3-4 weeks every summer, and the Kids Carnival our newest event that happens in August and provided free of charge to all who wish to enjoy an afternoon of carnival games, treats and crafts.
All these events are made possible with the help of generous donations and of course our wonderful team of volunteers and our board members.
