À propos
With Alexsandra Idzior from the University of the Fraser Valley
Today, tulips are readily available in a rainbow of colours – yet once they were considered priceless rarities. This beautifully flowering plant entered Europe and then North America from central Asia, via Kazakhstan, Persia and present-day Turkey. Introduced to the Netherlands in the late 16th century, tulips were avidly collected and studied by botanists, connoisseurs, artists, and intellectuals.
They rapidly became a coveted luxury item, and for a short time, they were the main object of monetary speculation and the first example of an economic bubble. In two online presentations, we will discuss and view the representation of tulips through centuries of culture and art while celebrating their dominant place in the horticulture and especially in the arts - from ceramics, through textiles, to paintings, furniture, and home decoration.
