À propos
Join us for the second session of Stitching Together: Cross-Cultural Narratives Through Embroidery as part of Culture Days! This unique series, hosted by Creative Community Hive and supported by the Burlington Arts and Culture Fund, brings together a fusion of stories and traditions, woven into a collaborative artwork.
October 2nd, 10 am-12 pm at Port Nelson Church, Burlington, we will feature the intricate art of Schwalm embroidery, led by multidisciplinary artist Tatjana Reithofer.
What is Schwalm Embroidery?
Schwalm embroidery, also known as whitework, hails from the Schwalm region in Germany. Its hallmark is its striking "white-on-white" designs, created using a variety of stitches such as satin stitch, chain stitch, and pulled thread work. Often inspired by nature, Schwalm motifs include delicate hearts, flowers, and leaves, forming beautifully symmetrical patterns.
This traditional craft once adorned bridal wear and clothing, serving as a symbol of status and regional identity. Its intricate openwork patterns, combined with botanical motifs, give Schwalm embroidery its distinct, airy texture and elegance.
Instructor Bio
Tatjana Reithofer, an artist with a deep passion for cultural exploration, will guide this session. A graduate of OCAD U’s Sculpture & Installation program, Tatjana's work frequently reflects her experience of navigating cultural identities, particularly her German heritage and multicultural upbringing in Mexico. Her artistic practice blends found objects with various craft techniques, including textiles and woodworking.
Tatjana’s artistic journey is rooted in helping others explore their own cultural narratives through art, making her the perfect guide to lead us into the world of Schwalm embroidery.
