Introduction to Encaustic Painting: A Interactive Demo
Where Ancient Meets Contemporary
Discover the magic of encaustic painting in this interactive demo designed for curious creatives of all levels. Rooted in an ancient technique dating back to the Greeks and Egyptians, encaustic is a versatile medium made from melted wax and pigment.
This hands-on experience invites participants to explore the tactile and transformative nature of encaustic paint. You'll explore how to fuse layers with heat, build texture and embed mixed media to a surface in ways that are both sculptural and painterly. Whether you’re drawn to bold abstraction or delicate detail, encaustic offers endless possibilities.
No experience is necessary, just a willingness to experiment and enjoy the process.
All materials will be provided. Come with curiosity, leave with a small piece and a deeper understanding of this art form.
Organisateur
PH1 Studios
PH1 Studios is a Toronto-based collaborative art practice founded by encaustic painter Melissa Espina and photographer Pietro Gallo. Their work blends ancient and contemporary techniques, combining photography, wax, and mixed media to create one-of-a-kind pieces that explore texture, memory, and materiality.
The studio is committed to experimentation and accessibility, regularly engaging the public through exhibitions, artist talks, hands-on workshops, and cultural events. PH1 believes that art should be immersive and inclusive—encouraging audiences to not only observe but participate in the creative process.
Year-round, PH1 Studios produces original encaustic-photographic works, collaborates with fellow artists, and offers educational programming designed to introduce diverse communities to the possibilities of encaustic art. Their studio, located in the historic 401 Richmond building, serves as a vibrant hub for artistic production, learning, and connection.
PH1’s participation in Ontario Culture Days reflects its ongoing mission to share the tactile, transformative nature of encaustic painting—where ancient meets contemporary and creativity is inspired through hands-on exploration.
