À propos

“Hyperbolic Cellulose” is a research project conducted at the BIOM_Lab, (Faculty of Architecture, University of Manitoba), exploring the large-scale applications of locally grown bacterial cellulose membranes. The installation features a hyperbolic paraboloid wood structure that supports over 300 square feet of this innovative biobased material. Participants are invited to experience the vibrant colours, unique textures, flexibility, and translucent qualities of the installation and to consider the potential of integrating bacterial cellulose and other biobased materials into everyday life. Following its display at the Nuit Blanche event, the structure will be relocated to a new site to study its weathering and decay under Canadian outdoor conditions. This will add to the ongoing research on the material’s long-term viability.

BIOM_Lab

The BIOM_Lab is a research group founded in 2021 within the Faculty of Architecture at the University of Manitoba. Our focus lies at the intersection of biology and design. We explore theoretical constructs using digital simulation tools and applied science experiments with biomaterials. Through these multifaceted approaches, we advance architectural research and provide a transdisciplinary platform for students and researchers to investigate innovative design avenues.

Our work with biomaterials aims to optimize resource use in buildings and support local production and distribution of materials for Northern and remote communities. In addition, the BIOM_Lab promotes the exploration of alternative design methodologies that challenge current architectural norms. We enjoy questioning established concepts related to homogeneous thermal comfort standards, monolithic building envelopes, building life span and material durability, among others. We believe biologically inspired design and biobased materials serve as excellent catalysts for these transformative conversations.
