À propos

On loan from the Legacy of Hope Foundation, the exhibit “Bi-Giwen: Coming Home, Truth Telling from the Sixties Scoop”, will be a significant part of our National Day for Truth and Reconciliation activities. This exhibition explores the experiences of Survivors of the Sixties Scoop, which began in the 1960s, where Indigenous children were taken from their families, often forcibly, and fostered and/or adopted out to non-Indigenous homes often far away from their communities and some across the globe.

Developed with input from the National Indigenous Survivors of Child Welfare Network, this innovative and challenging exhibition features the first-person oral testimonies of 12 Indigenous Survivors of the Sixties Scoop, and reflects upon their pain, loss but also their enduring strength, courage, and resilience.

This exhibit will be on display in our Gallery from mid-September to mid-October 2024.

Our Art Gallery will be open on Monday, September 30 and the public will be invited to view this exhibition to contemplate and gain a greater understanding Canadians about the history of Indigenous people in relation to the Sixties Scoop.

The primary objectives of this exhibit are to acknowledge this part of our history; to promote awareness about the Sixties Scoop and the long-term effect that this practice had on the First Nations people; and to honour those whose lives have been impacted by the Sixties Scoop.

Grand Coteau Heritage & Cultural Centre

The Grand Coteau Heritage & Cultural Centre (GCHCC) houses a museum, art gallery and the Shaunavon Branch of the Chinook Regional Library.

Our museum collection is multi-disciplinary, including artifacts relating to the human history of Shaunavon, fine arts, and natural history specimens of the area.

Our art gallery hosts a minimum of six visual & media arts exhibitions per year featuring local artists and exhibitions available through the Organization of Saskatchewan Arts Councils Arts on the Move touring program.

A variety of programs and tours are offered in association with our art gallery and museum collection, making us more than a collection of objects. Educational programs are offered on a regular basis throughout the year to school students and are provided to other groups upon request. Our public programming provides opportunities for our community to learn & enjoy the arts, as well as the natural history and the human history of our area. The GCHCC serves as a popular locale for many community gatherings and events.
