À propos
This work is part of a collection titled Ghosts Don’t Cross Borders, other works in this collection include “Trapped in Heaven's Gate,” and the Canadian debut of “All the Love We Cannot Bear, Articulated.” Together, these works speak to the human cost of the war in Ukraine—through the lens of memory, loss and justice.
Ghosts Don’t Cross Borders is a refusal to forget what the war in Ukraine leaves behind — and what the world leaves behind when it moves on.
"Ukrainian Artists United" is an artwork under the guise of a global movement of artists and musicians utilizing their talent and approaches to expression to humanize the current war in Ukraine, turning statistics into people and bolstering efforts to advocate for its peaceful end.
The war on Ukraine has transfixed the eyes of the world with its senseless violence and malevolent attack on human rights on women, children and all those who comprise this prideful nation. Artists whose role in society is to act as foil and by proxy moral arbitrators for the collective unconscious have now traded their instruments for arms to defend their country on way or another.
Music producer and Founder and CEO of Make Music Matter Darcy Ataman M.S.C.O.M. (Levon Helm) and photographer Jason Willheim (Quentin Tarantino, Tim Burton, Guns N’ Roses) traveled to Ukraine for a week in August of 2022 in order to capture the lives of artists/musicians whose lives have been decimated by the current conflict. Both visuals and audio were captured from these subjects in order to create a work of art that is impactful and able to ingrain into the consciousness of those not living in the conflict. The final product is as a series of large still photographs or moving short film gifs with embedded audio serving as a two minute musical score that represents the unique story of each individual and subject. The audio and music recorded in the field was augmented by well-known guest musicians such as members of Billy Talent, the Trews, Broken Social Scene, etc. acting as a cross-cultural collaboration, adding gravitas and imbuing empathy throughout the entire work.
Locations: Canadian Museum for Human Rights and steps of Centenntial concert hall.
