À propos
Join Aileen Vantomme for an informal Meet the Artist session in the gallery. Aileen will discuss her inspiration and process behind her latest body of work, "deposit/ed", on display at the Ferry Building Gallery, a selection of ceramics inspired by mass depositing of shells onto the Salish shorelines after each extreme heat event. Works include coil built vessels with repeated glazings for highly textured surfacing and intricate assemblies of slab built ceramics, both wall mounted and free standing.
While the shoreline is always littered with shell remnants, each heat event gives rise to an unprecedented quantity deposited in tidal pools. Layers upon layers of shells produced new massings with their own qualities. These deposits brought forth new opportunities for exploration. Combining traditional ceramic techniques and architectural principles, the selection of ceramic works presented plays with the act of layering and the discoveries made when a ubiquitous object is viewed collectively.
Aileen Vantomme is a visual artist working in ceramics. She works solely by hand to create textures and forms heavily influenced by the ubiquitous sea shell found dotting the shoreline of the Salish Sea. Layering custom glazes over multiple firings, work is created from traditional coil and slab built methods but presented in assemblies or groupings. Small batch runs highlight the subtle variations found in handmade stoneware production. Though largely self taught, her techniques have been augmented with coursework in fine art and architectural studies from various art centres and universities across North America over the last thirty years.

Ferry Building Gallery
The Ferry Building Gallery is a public community art gallery operated by the District of West Vancouver and is located in the heart of Ambleside at Ambleside Landing. Situated in one of West Vancouver’s original buildings, the gallery serves as a hub for arts and culture. The gallery presents up to 11 exhibitions annually at the Ferry Building, four Art in the Hall exhibitions annually at Municipal Hall, and promotes art education and appreciation through a wide range of events and programs, including participating in the annual Harmony Arts Festival.
The Ferry Building Gallery enlivens, enriches, engages, informs, and educates our community by presenting enriching, artist-led experiences for the community, including a mix of juried and invitational exhibitions, lectures, tours, and programs which reflect the cultural diversity of the North Shore.
The gallery is open and accessible to all and is a place for the community to experience and celebrate the arts. It supports the development of emerging and established artists from the North Shore, the Sea-to-Sky Corridor, and the Sunshine Coast.
We acknowledge that our arts programming and operations take place on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish), səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh), and xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) nations.
