A film and sound installation exploring female identity and physicality through 9 solos collaboratively created between Peggy Baker and renowned dance artists from across Canada.

-

Gestures of particularity. Of female identity. Specific. Linguistic. Urgent articulations and expressions bursting forth. Present. Exposed. Beings in full.

her body as words, a new work by Toronto-based choreographer Peggy Baker, fragments and explodes notions of female identity as expressed by 9 Canadian dance artists, through film by Jeremy Mimnagh (Toronto). Sensing, sensate and sensual, these bodies of light and sound signal to the world from an installation on the screens at Yonge-Dundas Square and through a soundscape by Debashis Sinha available via an on site QR code. Inspired by the 2009 translation of Simone de Beauvoir’s The Second Sex, Baker entered a deeply collaborative process involving personal conversations with the performers. Dancing the complexities of their lived identities, these artists offer gestural renderings touching on themes of race, gender expression, sexual orientation, sexual appetite, pregnancy, miscarriage, motherhood, disability, physical labour and aging.

How can we say the things that we feel? How much can we speak? What can we reveal? This. This mystery. It’s your story too.
