À propos

Captivating audiences with their expert playing skills and their energetic, innovative approach, VC2 Cello Duo performs with panache. They present artistically challenging yet accessible programs, from classical masterworks to unknown gems and boundary-pushing music, in venues from intimate cabarets to Roy Thomson Hall.

They’re in town to give a Consortium Aurora Borealis concert Saturday evening October 1 at St. Paul’s United. As a treat, we offer you a glimpse into their exciting musical life, through their intriguing “Up Close and Personal” presentation earlier that afternoon. This special educational event combines chat with playing of musical excerpts, in their inimitable style.

Cellists Bryan Holt and Amahl Arulanandam convey “an enthusiasm that is catching”, appealing to all ages, including youth, bringing people to the edge of their seat! They quickly win audience’s hearts both with their virtuosic playing skills and their warm, witty and humorous patter about their music and experiences, drawing many chuckles and smiles.

Known for his artistic versatility, Bryan has performed throughout North America and abroad in numerous concert halls and alternative venues. With tastes ranging from Baroque music to metal, cellist Amahl is known for his musical ability to adapt to many different genres. Feeling at home in studios, small clubs and large concert-halls, Amahl hopes to convey that musical expression is beyond genres and labels.

VC2’s concert program “Beethoven Rebooted” provides a snapshot of the cello repertoire—historic and new compositions—with ties to the great composer. Their own arrangements of works by Beethoven, including Ludwig’s contemporary cello colleagues, are intertwined with a few commissioned pieces by Canadian composers, again inspired by Beethoven’s cello sonatas. Spanning genres and with influences from jazz to contemporary, and even hints of the rock world, VC2’s program showcases the diverse future of virtuosic music for cello duo. Come meet the artists!

Organisateur

Consortium Aurora Borealis

Founded in 1979 by Artistic Director Elizabeth Ganiatsos, Consortium Aurora Borealis is a vibrant non-profit, charitable arts organization, specializing in the performance of chamber music from the Baroque era and Beyond. High artistic standards, varied and exciting programming, and historically-themed concerts with authentic instruments add to its dynamic presence in Northwestern Ontario.

Our city’s finest professional soloists and chamber ensembles join with distinguished guest artists in eight concerts each season, normally presented in St. Paul’s United Church, a heritage building noted for its fine acoustics.

A reasonable admission price makes these performances accessible to everyone. Consortium Aurora Borealis remains vital within our community; it has built a reputation for musical excellence over the past forty-four seasons, maintaining a vigorous presence in Thunder Bay. It has been hailed with great enthusiasm by audience and press alike, and continues with its mission to educate as well as to entertain.

We have partnered with the Lakehead University Department of Music on many occasions, providing our guest artists for some “Up Close and Personal” presentations and for performance master classes, as part of our educational mandate.
