Our typical summer programming looked quite different this year and we took the opportunity to explore creative ways of operating in a virtual environment as well as planning ahead for next year. Once we knew that we'd be unable to hold in-person programming, we focused our efforts on preparing for our 100th anniversary next summer.
We held a video shoot in Windermere over four days in mid August, showcasing all that Muskoka Chautauqua has to offer.
On land overlooking Lake Rosseau, on a hay wagon under twinkle lights and the stars stands an Ojibway elder sharing messages of wisdom and bringing greetings to a group of artists singing, dancing, painting, filming, writing, sharing and making beautiful, creative treasurers from their hearts and souls.
For most of us, it's our first time out since March. Some participated from a nearby city, filming at a different location, but totally connected and also a very significant part of Muskoka Chautauqua and its history.
This land and these lakes and Muskoka Chautauqua have long been an intersection for diverse and unexpected interactions and cultural engagement.
We are sharing online highlights of the Windermere Village Arts Festival which was filmed without an audience, in Muskoka and Toronto, including behind the scenes’ conversations with the artists.
Sean is a practicing professional artist who, since receiving his Fine Arts Degree from Georgian College in 1998, has participated in over 70 exhibitions throughout North America. In 2004 Sean started his own in-class, art education business “Art for Art’s Sake”, where in each and every year he reaches on average 3,000 students. Over the course of 22 years, Mr. Dawson has designed, developed, and delivered art programs for such institutions as The City of Barrie, Muskoka Place Gallery, Muskoka Chautauqua, The Township of Bradford/ West Gwillimbury, Martha Street Studios (Winnipeg, MB), the Art Gallery of Woodstock, and the Art Gallery of Ontario.
Within his personal visual art practice he has utilized reclaimed materials and appropriated imagery presented to the masses to create several, enormous bodies of work analyzing Pop Culture and its effects on time, society and ones own self, past and present.
For culture Days, Sean-William has created a 1hr “How-To” video on the basics of shading. The video focuses on proper pencil and shading techniques, followed by a step-by-step creation utilizing said techniques. It’s easy and fun to follow along for anyone from the ages 8 to 98 !!
