À propos

Out of Africa, at Home Here

Celebrate Africa and the people of African Descent through hands-on workshops, vibrant live music and local community groups. One Burlington has a fun and full afternoon of programs for people from 8 to 98!

We have 5 workshops to choose from and since the workshops will be repeated, you can try your hand at 2! At African Beats our choreographer will lead you in an easy dance routine. Line dance together to intense African Beats! Register the right answers on your mobile phone as you play African Trivia. Show off all you know about the beautiful Continent! Learn about African Foods including herbs, spices and new recipes. Taste Ethiopian coffee at our free coffee bar. African prints and colours have long influenced the world of fashion. Discover the versatility of African Textiles. We all admire the giant animals of Africa. Learn how we can help conserve Africa’s Animals!

In addition to our workshops, there will be two exceptional African roots musical groups. Nostalgia Egyptian Music is a dynamic group that reimagines the rhythms of Egyptian music for a modern audience. With a fusion of traditional instruments and contemporary beats, they create a high-energy sound that is both authentic and innovative. Their music is a celebration of Egypt's rich cultural heritage, presented in a way that is fresh and exciting.

Okavango African Orchestra explores the vast array of musical traditions that span the African landscape. By carefully selecting instruments and drawing inspiration from a myriad of rhythmic patterns, they craft a musical landscape that resonates with the soul of Africa while pushing the boundaries of conventional sound. This is more than just music; its a celebration of the vibrant tapestry that is African heritage, expressed through the universal language of harmony.

One Burlington has been presenting similar events since 2017. Each year we highlight different cultures and celebrate diversity in our community. Several years ago, we partnered with the Burlington Performing Arts Centre to ensure that our attendees have a fully accessible facility and our artists are showcased in an excellent theatre.

At “Out of Africa, at Home Here” we will again be collecting food and cash donations for the Burlington Food Bank in lieu of charging admission.

Please note: the program may be subject to change. This description will be updated with the freshest information.

Our thanks to the Government of Canada for their support of this event.
