For children of all ages. Families will explore Deaf culture and American Sign Language through the 2 1/2 minute video, Meet Ayla, followed by drama and storytelling with Deaf Spirit Theatre.
There will be two performances:
10:30am - 11:30am at the Central library branch
3pm - 4pm at the Isabel Turner library branch
Interpretation will be provided for hearing audiences.
Meet Ayla! is a video created by Kingston's Jessica Sergeant. With millions of views on Facebook, the video featuring 22-month-old Ayla, a Deaf baby with savvy ASL skills. The video highlights importance of early access to sign language.
Deaf Spirit Theatre features four Deaf performers who are native ASL signers. They will present short, funny skits followed by interactive storytelling in ASL using the popular stories Brown Bear, Brown Bear What do You See? by Bill Martin and The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle.
American Sign Language is one of 300 sign languages worldwide. In June 2019, the Accessible Canada Act recognized ASL, Langue des Signes Québécoise (LSQ) and Indigenous sign languages as the primary languages of Deaf people in Canada.

Deaf Spirit Theatre
We are a Deaf theatre group from Kingston/Toronto. We entertain families with Deaf and hearing children via American Sign Language (ASL). We strongly believe in providing shows with fully inclusion. We do lots of comedy skits, ASL poetry, storytelling and music.
We have performed at Sound Off festivals since 2017, in Edmonton. It is Canada’s only Deaf Theatre Festival.
