Expressing Creativity Through Visual Storytelling with Jeff Chiba Stearns

For this artist talk, Jeff will share and discuss his past and future work and how visual storytelling can be used to ignite creative expression and imagination.

Join Emmy® nominated and Webby award-winning animation and documentary filmmaker, as well as an acclaimed author and illustrator, Jeff Chiba Stearns, as he discusses his creative process creating animation and documentary films and television series, children’s books and graphic novels. Jeff has been telling visual stories since graduating from the Emily Carr University of Art + Design with a degree in Film Animation in 2001, the same year he founded Vancouver-based boutique animation studio and publishing company Meditating Bunny Studio Inc.

From directing animated commercials for companies like Sharpie and Post-it Note, to short and feature films including "Yellow Sticky Notes" (2007), "One Big Hapa Family" (2010) and "Mixed Match" (2016), Jeff's work has broadcast around the world, screened in hundreds of international film festivals and won over 40 awards. Jeff has also written and illustrated the children’s books "Mixed Critters" (2018) and "Nori and His Delicious Dreams" (2020) and the graphic novel, "On Being Yukiko" (2021). He is currently working on two new historical and fantasy based graphic novels. Jeff, who now teaches at the Emily Carr University of Art and Design has also spoken at hundreds of schools and universities across North America and around the world. He has also directed over 60 episodes of the hit pre-school animated series "The Treebees" which airs on the Knowledge Network and has amassed 50+ millions views on YouTube.
