À propos

Peg dolls are steeped in history. Examples of these toys have been found in cultures throughout the world.

In Japan, for example, one can find the art of Kokeshi dolls that dates back to the 1600’s. In Russia, the nesting dolls called Matryoshka dolls have served for centuries as the canvass for folk crafts painters. In the Polish Tatra Mountain region, wooden figurines carved out of one piece of wood have served as folk toys, souvenirs and chess game pieces for generations of children. While in the Erzgebirge region of Germany the craft of wooden peg dolls has taken the art to a collector’s level.

Hand-carved wooden peg dolls are also part of the Inuit culture of the Arctic north as well as of the Viking cultures that travelled and traversed the northern seas from Scandinavia via Greenland to the Newfoundland coast of Canada.

The look of peg dolls might have changed somewhat over time but the concept remains the same. Their simplicity, durability as well as warmth to the touch inspire children in their imaginative play. Every time they play with the dolls they create their own little imaginary world where magical feelings are bountiful. One day a peg doll can represent a gnome, while another day the same doll could be a wizard or a knight in shining armour.

Peg dolls are a great building block for storytelling, puppet plays, a nature table or a travel play kit.
