À propos

Tucked along River Road at the southernmost foot of Number Four Road, lies an old fishing village in Richmond B.C. called Finn Slough. A hidden history belonging to generations of a Finnish fishing community from over 100 years ago. Their slough tells stories of artistry and perseverance within its quirky architecture, lively nature, and innovative community that continues to live there today. "Sisu" takes a micro look at a historically kept community living frozen in time, surrounded by ever-growing cities around it, and what one must do to adapt through the challenges of environmental changes.

"Sisu" is filmed on the unceded ancestral territories of the Hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ speaking people, as well as Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh Nations.

"Sisu" is directed by Lauren Olson, an emerging female filmmaker based in Vancouver BC. Her practice focuses on media-based works including documentary and narrative stories. She will attend the premiere and will be available for a chat after the screening.

This film was made possible with many creatives, including the Director of Photography, Tamas McGillivray, as well as the original sound compositionist Kaia Barth-Lessard. The Gulf of Georgia Cannery Society is pleased to be a partner of the production

Gulf of Georgia Cannery Society

The Gulf of Georgia Cannery Society is a non-profit and registered charity organization that honours the importance of Canada’s West Coast fishing history by sharing stories of the fishing industry and fishing communities through exhibitions, collections, programs, and events.

The Society's mandate is to operate the Gulf of Georgia Cannery National Historic Site on behalf of Parks Canada. Since the 1980s, the Society has worked in partnership with Parks Canada to preserve the Cannery facility and is now responsible for its interpretation through tours and educational programming, site promotion and regular maintenance.

In addition to operating the historic site, the Society works to achieve its mission through other activities such as creating annual feature exhibitions related to fishing history and producing community events such as the annual Pull of the Net multicultural celebration. In all activities, the Society is committed to working with the Steveston community to preserve its fishing heritage and local charm.
