In 1826, George Chalmers, a Scottish immigrant and merchant, began buying up land along The Sixteen where it crossed Dundas Street. On his newly acquired land, Chalmers built a gristmill, a sawmill a store and an ashery, which, became the centre of the Sixteen Village or Proudfoot’s Hollow as it was known to the Scottish immigrants who settled there and in the surrounding area.
The village no longer exists! Using historic maps and information gleaned through an archaeological excavation conducted by the Halton Regional Museum in 1989, Town of Oakville Heritage Planning staff will guide participants through a settler’s view of the area and discuss why the village was important as well as why it ceased to exist.
