À propos

Samgomu (Three-drum dance) derived from one of the oldest traditions of Buddhist drum dance. The dancer is centered with three drums surrounding her. Various drumming techniques and dance movements are joined together to create a harmonious dance.

Samgomu starts slowly and gradually leads to dynamic and exciting rhythm. Among all the drum dances of Korea, samgomu is known to display the most dynamic and grandiose dance movements. It shows dancer’s great flexibility as well as their sense of rhythm. Sango-mu exemplifies the dynamics of Korean dance with dignified uniform of movement.

The Korean Dance Studies Society of Canada (KDSSC) is a charitable organization in Toronto founded by Mi Young Kim, the artistic director. The KDSSC is a creative dance organization that collaborates across cultures and generations while honouring Korean tradition and culture. It is dedicated to educating and training young people the rich Korean dance heritage, and to spreading awareness of traditional Korean dance among the Canadian public by staging dynamic performances.

Artistic director Mi Young Kim is the first Canadian professional Korean dancer, a pioneer and the leading authority on Korean dance. She immigrated to Canada in 1979 and started the Mi Young Kim Korean Folk Dance Institute. As the institute grew, it became the Korean Dance Studies Society Canada (KDSSC) in 1987. In order to promote Korean dance and the growth of culturally specific dance in general, there are 3 parts to KDSSC: the Soo Ryu School of Dance & Drum, the Mi Young Kim Dance Company and the Soo Ryu Dance Festival.

We provide a supportive home for professional dancers,

pre professional dance students and dedicated

amateurs as we seek to unite all Canadian cultures

through the art and practice of dance. Our website (www.koreandance.net)

gives an introduction to the history of traditional Korean

Dance and provides information on the company’s

background; past and upcoming performances and

events; basic and professional training programs; and a

range of photos and videos for you to view.
