On August 9, 2016, a young Cree man named Colten Boushie died from a gunshot to the back of his head after entering Gerald Stanley's rural property with his friends. The jury's subsequent acquittal of Stanley captured international attention, raising questions about racism embedded within Canada's legal system and propelling Colten's family to national and international stages in their pursuit of justice. Sensitively directed by Tasha Hubbard, Nîpawistamâsowin: We Will Stand Up weaves a profound narrative encompassing the filmmaker's own adoption, the stark history of colonialism on the Prairies, and a transformative vision of a future where Indigenous children can live safely on their homelands.

Incident at Restigouche

On June 11 and 20, 1981, the Quebec Provincial Police (QPP) raided Restigouche Reserve, Quebec. At issue were the salmon-fishing rights of the Mi’kmaq. Because salmon has traditionally been a source of food and income for the Mi’kmaq, the Quebec government’s decision to restrict fishing aroused consternation and anger. Released in 1984, this groundbreaking and impassioned account of the police raids brought Alanis Obomsawin to international attention.

The Civic Theatre

The Civic Theatre is a cultural media arts centre in Nelson BC dedicated to the presentation of film and a wide variety of cultural and educational experiences to the community we serve. As a registered Canadian charity, our mandate is to provide a public amenity by operating and maintaining a theatre as a multi-use facility for film screenings and for other artistic, educational and community-building programs and events for the benefit of the general public; be a home and presenter of lectures, workshops, courses and seminars on topics related to film or utilizing digital media for a diverse range of audiences; and protect, preserve and improve Nelson’s historic Civic Theatre.

Our theatre currently features a 306-seat auditorium with a top-notch digital projector and 7.1 Surround Sound. We present a wide variety of films, ranging from current blockbusters to local independent films, and all sorts of offerings in between.

We are a proud supporter of our local community. Throughout the year we offer special events and donated nights to our community for everything from meetings to screenings, making our overall activity much more diverse than at your average cinema.
