The combination of the performance excerpt and the talk-back session promises a rich, multifaceted experience that blends artistry, history, and cultural exchange.

"The Noose" is a gripping tragicomedy, skillfully translated by Haitian academic Dr. Asselin Charles, based in Toronto, from Frankétienne's acclaimed play "Pèlen Tèt." Frankétienne, a Nobel Prize nominee widely recognized as Haiti's greatest living writer, originally published and performed "Pèlen Tèt" in Haitian Creole in 1978 during the height of the Duvalierist dictatorship, which lasted from 1957 to 1986. To this day, it remains arguably the most popular, critically acclaimed dramatic work in the Haitian Creole language and is a canonical work in Haitian theatre.

The play is about two Haitian immigrants, a middle-class intellectual and a peasant, who share a basement apartment in New York City in the 1980s. Odd couple clashes, class conflicts, and ideological jousts ensue in fast-paced and colorful exchanges filled with humor and pathos. The two protagonists and antagonists ultimately realize they are both engaged in the same transcendent quest for human dignity. Casting aside their class and ideological differences, they join forces in a common struggle against an oppressive and exploitative system that threatens to crush their shared humanity.

Starring actors Edmond Clark as Polydor and Louco St. Fleur as Pyram.

Nearly 50 years since its original publication and premiere performance in 1978, the play is having its revival right here in Toronto! Now, for the first time in Canada at The Next Stage Festival!

See it first on October 6th in Vaughan!
